Mesmerizing Meghalaya & Kaziranga

7 Nights / 8 Days

Separating the Assam valley from the plains of Bangladesh, hilly Meghalaya – the ‘abode of clouds’ – is a cool, pine-fresh mountain state set on dramatic horseshoes of rocky cliffs. The famed one-horned rhinoceros, one of India’s best-known tourism mascots, calls the expansive grasslands of the Kaziranga National Park its home. Its landscape is a compete treat for the eyes of a nature lover.

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong (99 kms; Drive time: 3 - 4 hours)

Pickup from Guwahati airport (group must reach by 2.30 PM) and drive to Shillong with few stops on the way. Overnight at Blueberry Inn or similar


Day 2: Shillong

Most part of the day will be spent exploring areas around Shillong. We start the day with a walk in the sacred forests of Mawphlang, preserved by the local communities for centuries. The Khasis being an animist tribe used to believe in the spirits of the forests hence believed them to be very sacred. From here proceed to Shillong peak from where we get panoramic views of entire Shillong. After lunch we go to see a game of ‘teer’ a local form of archery and the most popular sport in Meghalaya. Overnight at Blueberry Inn or similar


Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunjee (70 Kms, Drive time: 2 hours)

After breakfast drive to Cherrapunjee. We reach the village of Likensnew from where we undertake a trek to see the unique Double Decker root bridges. The trek is a strenuous one since one needs to descend 2500 feet and once again climb up the same altitude. For those who do not want to do the entire trek, can walk down 1500 feet till the longest root bridge. Overnight at Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort or similar


Day 4: Cherrapunjee to Pobitra (185 Kms; Drive time: 6 hours)

Post breakfast drive to Pobitara . On the way visit Mawsmai caves, enjoying the natural limestone formations which nature has created inside. Further we drive to Nohkalikai falls, the highest falls in India. Close by we will visit the Rama Krishna Mission museum to understand more about the Khasi culture. We will take a short break at Umiam lake which is a beautiful reservoir near Shillong. In the evening relax around the resort.

Day 5: Pobitra to Kaziranga (180 Kms; Drive time: 4 hours)

After breakfast we go for a boat ride on the Brahmaputra. The ride will give an excellent feel of the Brahmaputra landscape, along with halts on small scenic islands. After lunch we drive to Kaziranga and check into the hotel. Overnight at Iora Retreat or similar


Day 6: Kaziranga

Wake up early in the morning for an elephant safari in the grasslands of Kaziranga which is sure to leave you mesmerized. After breakfast freshen up and relax at the resort. In the afternoon we go for a jeep safari in the central range of the park, which has a high density of Rhinos, Deer and Water Buffalos. Overnight at Iora Retreat or similar


Day 7: Kaziranga to Balipara (90 kms; Drive time: 2 hours)

After breakfast we drive to Balipara in the heart of the Assamese tea country. After lunch we will go to visit the tribal Mising village, learning about their lifestyle and unique agricultural and fishing practices. This would be followed by a dance performance by the Mising youth. In the evening, we take a walk around the tea estate* to learn all about how tea is grown and picked, followed by tea tasting.

Day 8: Balipara to Guwahati (235 kms; Drive time: 5 hours)

We leave early in the morning to drive directly to Guwahati airport
